EOA decided to expand its business and add new branches of service including interiors, surface design, branding and grow studio, an urban agriculture-focused design consultancy. It was an opportunity to introduce color to represent the five segments. A new typeface was chosen for the logo and the website was completely overhauled by the fantastic Sunderland Studio.

Email Newsletter

Bookkeeping Bookkeeping is a group of young women artists bookkeeping on the side.

The main pattern is a stylized abacus that can also be like a sexy beaded curtain, ready to pull to the side. The other is an arrangement of pluses, minuses, division and equals symbols that becomes almost floral. These patterns are applied to the website, business cards and other digital and print collateral.

Book

This bird pattern was water jet cut out of stainless steel for the facade of an Anthropologie store in Mississippi. Because of the constraints of the materials, they ended up patterning the bird a little differently than I originally intended - c’est la vie! But I think there’s still a nice shadow play that makes the facade appear more luminous.

CD Packaging

This two minute music video is for the song “New York, New York” by country/blues music artist, Roletta Fynn. We wanted to include cats, a big part of Roletta’s identity, and the iconic Empire State Building, which Roletta loves. We envisioned the video as a moving collage and story-boarded from start to finish, with a scene from “Godzilla” being a key influence. Roletta navigates the concrete (flower) jungle riding her trusty steed, hitting some potholes along the way.

To create the segment in which Roletta is riding a giant cat through a flower jungle and singing the chorus I recorded video of her straddling the back of a sofa and singing the song. I then grabbed still images from the footage and isolated Roletta from the background. I scrubbed the audio in After Effects in order to sync up the footage with her various mouth shapes.

Exhibition

The firm that I work for, EOA/Elmslie Osler Architect, was invited to install an exhibition in the Slocum Gallery at Syracuse University. I was the project manager and graphic designer for this multi-media exhibition showcasing EOA’s Food Chain project. The Food Chain is an urban farming and planning intervention which includes a green path of vertical farming walls. We wanted to create a path element to guide the viewer through the space and tie the exhibition conceptually to the project. We needed to communicate the conception, implementation and future of this very complex project to viewers who knew nothing about it.

We used layers of translucent green plexiglass panels to represent the path and to guide the viewer through the space. We silkscreened maps, diagrams and other pertinent information onto the panels. There was a video installation, a living wall panel with herb plants, a scale model, and three informational posters. All of the elements were suspended from the ceiling with fishing wire.

Identity

Ping is a very personal, almost autobiographical collection of jewelry and accessories by a Chinese–American architect. The client had always felt that brackets were a symbol that expressed her feelings of otherness; not quite Chinese, not quite American. She was ready to start shopping her designs around to fancy stores and she wanted a mark that was all her own.

I was able to incorporate the brackets into the word mark, for which I used a modified slab serif by Herb Lubalin. The lowercase i and the n start to look like a jeweler at her work table. The client’s spatial sensibility is complemented by this treatment as it becomes all about the negative space around and inside the letterforms. The cards are rubber stamp on kraft paper.

Surface

This laser-cut blackened steel fence was designed for the rooftop cafe of a Mediterranean restaurant/bar in the landmarked Meatpacking District. The olive branch motif reflects the Italian cuisine and was easily manipulated into an abstract organic pattern.

There were certain building code parameters influencing the design. For example, openings could be no larger than four inches; apparently the size of an infant’s head. I created a single tile that could be cut multiple times from one CAD drawing and placed together for a seamless repeat.
